A firestorm fed by erratic 55 mph winds churned across the foothills of San Bernardino, Calif, on Tuesday, charring 257 homes and forcing thousands to flee. The latest figures state that Italy's earthquake claimed at least 3,000 victims. The 33 bureaucrats whose private bathrooms were locked up in June because they were not high enough in the federal peeking order, have had their toilet privileges restored. The government’s housekeeping agency has backed down and liberated the privies in a building housing the Department of Health and Human services. Clerk of Continued On Back Page Watch Out For Flim-Flam Artists Tryon Police Chief Jerry Ross said that people in the area should watch out for flim-flam artists at work during the holiday season. He reported that a local woman was taken for $1600 Tuesday by two black women, who reportedly saw an envelope full of money fall out of her car These con artists usually trick elderly people, but anyone is a potential victim according to Chief Ross. Talks On China Students in two of Mrs. Shirley Nisbet's classes at Polk Central High School were treated on Wednesday to a slide talk and discussion period on China. The visitor was Horace Nash, son of John Nash II, who has just returned from a year of study at Peking University. Mr. Nash is a doctoral candidate in Political Science at Stanford University and is currently engaged in writing a thesis on contemporary Chinese politics. He and Miss Betsy Bingham, also from California, are the guests this week of Mr. and Mrs. John Nash on Laurel Ridge Road New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. William Weston of Rt. 2, Mill Spring are parents of a son, Jamie Lee, bom Nov. 15th at the Rutherford County Hospital.-Rutherford County News. Tryon Federal Is Expanding November 23, 1935, Tryon Federal received its charter from the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and officially opened its doors for business. Now, 45 years old, the Association is going strong, with total assets of over 32 million dollars. J. Russell Constance, president said "During the past 45 years we have seen many changes, but for all practical purposes, the business remained the same - - 'Thrift and Home Ownership." Serving Polk County and Upper South Carolina as a source of funds to enable our people to own a home and, of course, the "source of funds” being the savings depositors from the area. We presently have over 5,000 savings accounts. "Changes are taking place- - within the next few weeks we are changing from manual book- keeping system to (computer) data processing. This should be geared up and operating by early ■81" Mr. Constance said the association was BRANCHING OUT - - to better serve Polk County. The Association plans to construct a branch office in Columbus. Now in the planning stage, it is expected this office should open by July 1981.
